Jeff Schmalz, a celebrated young journalist at the New York Times, was diagnosed with AIDS 25 years ago after collapsing at his desk at the Times. The disease set him on a new course, one that eventually changed the way "the paper of record", and many others around the country, wrote about AIDS and about the lives of LGBTQ people.
Professor Samuel Freedman is an award-winning author, columnist for The New York Times, and professor at Columbia's School of Journalism.
