Welcome—we're excited you're thinking about Michigan Law!
OUTlaws and Michigan Law pride ourselves on being friendly, accessible, and welcoming places. We work to create a strong and inclusive social space for LGBTQ+ people at Michigan Law with regular get-togethers, meals, parties, and other social events.
In addition to a vibrant and fun social space, OUTlaws is committed to engaging our community in political and policy issues of critical importance to LGBTQ+ people. We bring leading legal scholars and activists to the law school for educational workshops, programs, and conferences throughout the year. If there is an LGBTQ+ issue that you care about, OUTlaws can help you explore the issue and bring the conversation to the larger law school community.
We work closely with MLaw students, administrators, and professors to ensure that LGBTQ+ individuals are welcome at Michigan Law and are successful in their professional pursuits. OUTlaws connects MLaw LGBTQ+ students with LGBTQ+ leaders in the field, LGBTQ-welcoming professional opportunities, and with supportive alumni. We are excited to organize unique pro bono opportunities in the local LGBTQ+ community and proud to provide a new summer scholarship to LGBTQ+ students doing public interest work. See more on the "Pro Bono Opportunities" page of the website.
Our dedicated members, supported by the significant resources of both the law school and one of the nation's leading research institutions, offer tremendous and diverse opportunities for LGBTQ+ MLaw students. In fact, 22% of the current 1L class identify as LGBTQ+.
Long story short: the OUTlaws members are awesome and MLaw is an incredible place to study law. You simply won't find a more enjoyable and substantial legal education anywhere else. We want you here and we're very happy to answer your questions about Michigan Law and our LGBTQ+ community.
Please do not hesitate to contact any of the OUTlaws board members to talk more or be connected with other LGBTQ+ law students at Michigan. You can also email the full board at outlawsexec@umich.edu.
